the dow ledges are just off stonington, in deer island
thorofare. standing on the ledges, you can look west to the town;
to the east you can look towards swan's island. there are many
islands to the south, including isle au haut. in the summer you can
watch yachts, sail boats and schooners, along with lobster boats,
going past the ledges. it is a really pretty place.
i have given this cache a 5 rating, because you will have to get
to it by boat or by kayak. the cache is an ammo box.
directions:
go to stonington on rt 15. as you are going down the hill into
town, take seabreeze ave on your left. at the end of the straight
section of the street, there is a big red building which belongs to
isle au haut boat company. there is a white building on the right
just before the red building (used to be a restaurant, for those of
you that have been there before.) in between the buildings, there
is a road (to the right).
the stonington harbormaster told me that this is the best place
to launch boats and kayaks. he asked that no one launch from the
town wharf because of traffic congestion. it's a short paddle to
the cache. the coords for the boat launch are 44 09.278 and 068
39.662.
