Peachtree
Rock Nature Preserve is owned and managed by the Nature
Conservancy.
The preserve is a unique part of this area, with strangely
shaped rocks, several interesting subclimates, unusual plants, and
the only waterfall I know of in the midlands.
The preserve is the site of the South Carolina's only
earthcache. There are three other caches are in the preserve, so we
can even get a little caching in while while we're cleaning up.
A lot of folks like to visit and hike here, unfortunately
including a few who've left beer cans, shopping bags and other
evidence of their picnicking behind.
We'll meet at 9am on October 8th in the parking area (at the
coordinates given above), where we'll join up with Wayne Grooms,
the local volunteer responsible for maintenance in the preserve.
He'll help us coordinate so we cover the most critical areas.
Plan on wearing long sleeves and pants as we'll have to do some
bush diving along the roads where plastic bags and paper have blown
in. And of course, you'll want to bring gloves. We'll provide trash
bags and plastic grocery bags so that we can carry several and
separate recyclables as we go.
We plan on finishing around noon and continuing the festivities
at the local Italian restaurant @ N33 50.729, W81 12.585) (it'll be
Dutch Treat). Team Bugg are South Carolina geocachers and partners
in this restaurant, so they'll understand if we bring a few twigs
and leaves in with us for lunch.
Please log a note to let us know if you plan to attend the cleanup
and the pizza party afterwards.
