Not always possible to cross but there's a way around that!
The River Coquet, 40 miles in length, rises in the Cheviot Hills, flows northeast, and enters the North Sea at Amble. Coquet Island lies just off the mouth of the river. This series of caches will take you to some interesting places along the course of the river, always through terrific scenery.
Rothbury the 'capital' of Coquetdale enjoys a picturesque riverside setting backed by the lofty Simonside hills. The village, which has long been the popular starting point for visitors to one of England's most beautiful and tranquil valleys, is set mid-way along the River Coquet. It is here along a footpath which leads to Thrum Mill, that you will find the round, grey stepping-stones. During periods of heavy rainfall the stepping stones will be impassable but about 400yds away you can cross the road bridge should you find yourself on the opposite bank to the cache site. The footpath in front of the Thrum Mill was once the main road into Rothbury and the Mill used to grind corn for the local bakers and for sale further afield. Just past the Mill you will see a steep sided gorge with a narrow channel worn through the rocks. This is known as the Thrum. The river at this point widens out into a very large picturesque lake-size pool, a favourite fishing ground for the majestic Heron which can often be seen perched on nearby rocks.
