The Romans open-mined for lead in this area and in its heyday in the mid 1870's Snailbeach produced over 10% of all the nation's lead ore, being one of the richest lead mines in Europe.
The above approximate co-ords. are for the designated car park at Snailbeach Village Hall (and toilets!). DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE ELSE. Since there are several private properties within the mine area, please respect their privacy by staying on footpaths, tracks and roads. Take care whilst walking round the site; all mine shafts are capped but there are still a few potentially dangerous situations- supervise all children. It is worth reading the explanatory notice boards at the car park and around the site.
I wish to thank Shropshire County Council, Countryside Services, who own the site, for permission to place a cache here and for the kind assistance of Mr. Harvey Morgan, the countryside ranger for the Snailbeach area.
