A short downtown walk from the World's Only Corn Palace...I wonder why it's called "Hiram's Cache"?
Well...due to various much needed improvements it's moved... moved aways...but not too far! It still takes a couple of steps and basic math skills.
The coordinates are mine [not the Data Sheet’s] for Benchmark OR0003 in Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota. You might want to check the Data Sheet, anyway.
From information above the Benchmark determine when GLND and GLSD parted company. Subtract 19055 from that month and year and enter the result a yy.yyy below. From the Benchmark itself determine when it was set and then subtract 451 from that year and enter the result as x.xxx below.
N 43 yy.yyy
W 098 0x.xxx
When you reach that point - using the pedestrian and NOT the auto access - you'll need to "walk the line" 12 paces, more or less, to find Hiram's Cache just around the bend. It's a 12” piece of dark green PVC pipe, capped, labeled, and tethered.
Inside you'll find the logbook plus, on 01-13-2008 anyway, a few unsharpened pencils, a couple pens, and that's about it. Leave a note explaining why you think this is called “Hiram’s Cache.” If you're a travelling man be sure to note from whence you hale. Have fun and don’t forget to visit the Corn Palace!
