Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache easily accessible from a paved parking lot. (When it was first published...) Besides a log book, pen and pencil it contains a cell phone antenna booster, counted cross stitch kit, 2 AA batteries just in case, a pair of dice, seahorse magnet, maze puzzle, marble, ball and a pink bead bracelet. FTF can claim the “Old West Country” dvd and the Deming fridge magnet which is courtesy of the Deming Luna Chamber of Commerce.

Deming, NM is more than just another town to drive by on the interstate. We've placed this cache to encourage visitors - as well as locals - to learn more about our community. Maybe passers-by will like what they see and stay awhile.

The first known inhabitants of this area were the Mimbres Indians. They lived and farmed along the Mimbres River. The Mimbres Indians are best remembered today for their beautiful pottery. If you have the time you can view some fine examples of their work at the Deming Luna Mimbres
Museum.

It was around 1800 when settlers began arriving in southwest NM. In it's early years the area had a bad reputation. It is said that outlaws rounded up in AZ were given a one way ticket to here. Mid century, the Butterfield Trail Stage had a stop nearby.

In late 1881, the Southern Pacific RR, building toward the west, reached this point and a tent and shanty city soon followed. It was named Deming after Mary Deming Crocker, the wife of a Southern Pacific RR executive. Six months later the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe RR lines arrived in town and Deming became an important community in the early history of southwest NM. Settlers flocked in, building were erected, stores and businesses were established and
through the years Deming continued to grow.

During WW I Camp Cody, a training camp, was established nearby. Following the war, Camp Cody became a tuberculosis sanitorium for former soldiers. It was run by the Catholic Sisters of the Holy Cross. The complex was destroyed by fire in 1939 and the sanitorium closed.

Following WW I Deming, like much of the nation, saw its' economy decline. Both of the banks in town closed their doors. Recovery was slow. WW II brought new growth to the area. An Army Air Force Base for training bombardiers was established in Deming. More than 5,000 men were stationed at the base. The Deming National Guard was called into service and sent to the Phillipines. Several of these brave men lost their lives in the Bataan death march. Others remained prisoners of war until 1945. Deming recently opened a new public school which was named Bataan to honor those National Guardsmen.

Deming, county seat of Luna County, has continued to grow through the years since WW II. It is currently home to approximately 14,000 people and offers it's citizens many amenities. Visitors will find a lot to do in town and nearby. The annual Deming Duck Races, held in late August, is a fun event you should not miss.

The cache was placed with the knowledge of the staff in the nearby office. If it's open they want you to stop in to say hello and let them know you are geocachers. Hours are Mon thru Fri 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cache is accessible and solvable 24/7.
