There is a car park at the southern end of the reservoir, north of Thornton Steward village on Moor Lane, the road to Finghall (N54.17.115 W001.43.334).
Thornton Steward is a small reservoir situated amid rolling countryside in the Yorkshire Dales. It is close to the villages of Thornton Steward and Finghall. The reservoir was completed in 1976. It holds 994tcm / 218.7 million gallons of water. It covers an area of 14 Hectares and the dam is 15.1m/49.5ft high.
The walk is not suitable for wheelchairs, the surface is mainly grass but there are sections of tarmac and concrete. Sheep graze the field so if you have a dog please keep it on a lead.
