Geocache Description:

The parking area for this Ouray County cache site is off of County Road 17 (the old "River Road") just where it turns into North Oak Street, on the north side of Ouray. The cache site is along the trail at 7673' elevation, less than 1/4 mile from the parking area. Good one for kids!

Parking area coordinates: N 38:02.374' W 107:40.925' at 7644' elevation. Good parking area for large vehicles & vehicles towing trailers which can turn off of CR 17 at the Silvershield Trail sign and park curbside along the new road which re-connects to CR 17 (via a left turn one block south of the trailhead). Parking area includes a streetlamp at trailhead's tiny new parkinglot. Silvershield Trail is a great starting point for accessing the mountain wilderness trails network west of Ouray, including Dallas Trail. All these trails are maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers!!

The parking area for this cache can be reached from the north off of Highway 550 via the Whispering Pines bridge onto CR 17, or from the south off of Highway 550 (Main Street in Ouray) by turning DOWNHILL (west) on 7th Street, crossing the Uncompahgre River (7th Street Bridge), and then turning right (north) on North Oak Street. North Oak Street will become County Road 17 (the old "River Road").

Just 3/16 mile north of the cache parking area is the "Ouray-Uncompahgre RiverWalk Water Ouzel" picnic area. This public picnic area includes a footbridge across the river, a very clean & new public restroom, gravel walking trails, an exercise station, and picnic tables on both sides of the river.

Follow Silvershield Trail to cache site coordinates.
