Geocache Description:

Walk through an attractive village to the church

The cache is designed to take you through the attractive village of Croxton and is deliberately easy rather than challenging.
The best parking place is by the Village Hall - first building on the left in the High Street, just off the A428. Do not drive farther down this road as it is residential with no legitimate parking places and there is a locked gate at the end.
The walk is an easy one (and buggy friendly apart from the gate) and goes through the eastern part of Croxton village where there are some fine houses with well-kept gardens. The Manor House, built in the 15th century, is of particular interest. Then through the pedestrian gate and down the road to St James' church.
The church is surrounded by Croxton Park Estate, a deer park of some 200 acres which is private property. There is public access through the park only to the church. Services are held every alternate Sunday at 10.30 am. and cache seekers who turn up at this time are asked to respect the privacy of the churchgoers. The body of the church is mostly 13th century though it has been much restored. The tower is 15th century with a big clock set into the north face and lots of good gargoyles. The cache is in the churchyard which is worth looking round. See the old-looking cross commemorating the vicar since the Reformation, but the core is a medieval preaching cross on a gnarled octagonal base.
