Geocache Description:

This gives all the information about the forest:

http://www.forestresearch.gov.uk/website/recreation.nsf/SearchAgentView/EnglandNorthamptonshireNoForestSalceyForestSalceyForestAccessPoint

***THE CO-ORDINATES ABOVE ARE FOR PARKING***

Well waymarked level paths. Walk, bike, horse or x-country buggy! May get muddy in poor weather (depending on the path you choose to follow). Toilets, refreshments at the Forest Café and there is also a good quality children’s play area.

The co-ordinates are for the Salcey Forest Main Car Park.**There is a £3.00 all day or £1 per hour car park fee (it was free when the cache was first set - that's progress for you!). Please note that the car park usually closes at 1900hrs (dusk during winter months), but you should still be able to park off the road after that time (for those of you with nocturnal tendencies!).

Should take no more than an hour, there and back, unless you link this one with our ‘Salcey Forest #1’, in which case it would be about six and a half miles for the two! Or take in the 'Salcey Trail' geocache series, plus several others, and really make a day of it!

Take a pen or pencil to do some simple calculations on the way round.

From the Car Park make your way along one of the trails to:

N52:09:752, W000:50:178, the Elephant Pond. So-called because elephants used to work in the forest during WW2 and used the pond for water and bathing (see (visit link) )

and then have a look around and count CAREFULLY the number of cables that are used to support and anchor the bridge. Call this number A. Then find your way to:

N52:(0)(A-1):(A-2)(A-5)(A-3)
W000:(A-6)(A-1):(A-1)(A-9)(A-6)

When you are there, or thereabouts, have a look around and find out when Harry Porter (no, not Harry Potter!) died. Write the date down in the form dd/mm/yyyy. Call the first numeral A, the second B and so on. You should have numerals next to A to H when you have finished.

Then find your way to the cache location at:

52:(D+H+A+F-G):(B-A)(H-E)(B+D+E)N,
000:(D-E)(F+B-A-E):(D-E)(H+E+D)(F-D)W.

Please re-hide carefully, it is close to a path. Please keep the container upright when you hide it, to keep out water - thanks.

Good luck! We hope that you enjoy the forest.

** You may like to enjoy a slight detour near the Elephant Pond to try the forest walkway that goes into and above the trees. It is wheelchair accessible and goes up to a height of 15 metres.
