Geocache Description:

An easy cache along the Geological Trail in the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens

To reach this cache, you will have to walk through the magnificent Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. The gardens are open from 08h00 - 18h00, last entrance at 17h00. There are varying entrance fees depending on your age and status, and whether there is something on in the gardens such as a concert. If you arrive at 16h30-ish during the week there's no charge.

Apart from admiring the gardens, to get to the cache, you will pass numerous geological features, including the magnetic mudstone. If you place a compass near these rocks, the needle will deviate from magnetic north. You will also pass the Black Eagles nesting site, and the 70m Witpoortjie waterfall. Also have a look at the interesting pear tree near the waterfall

The cache can be reached in about 30 minutes depending on your fitness, but a leisurely stroll should be the order of the day so bank on 45-60 minutes. There are numerous benches and information plaques along the trail. It is best to plan to spend half a day here and take the whole family and a picnic along. There is also a restaurant in the gardens which serves very good meals, but don't be in a hurry as the service is poor.

Parking and start point:
    S26º 05.159' E27º 50.703'

At the entrance, ask for a map of the JCI Geological trail. The cache is along this trail. My preferred route is in a clockwise direction, but the choice is yours. The cache is about 25m off the footpath, and concealed with a number of rocks. Take care to replace the rocks and be on the lookout for approaching hikers. Don't forget to wear a hat and carry water, you will be exposed to the sun for most of the trail. Mornings and afternoons are best.
