Geocache Description:

The McCann Family Farm Land Trust is 84 acres of hills and farmland with 2 brooks located on Route 190 in Somers, 0.7 mile east of the intersection of Route 83 on the northwestern slopes of Soapstone Mountain. It is currently being used for farming, timber and a nature preserve.

This property was acquired by the Northern Connecticut Land Trust (NCLT) in October 1997. The Land Trust is a private, non-profit organization that strives to assist local landowners preserve their properties, be it woodlands, wetlands, farmlands or open spaces. In addition, by creating and maintaining the trails and offering tours, they help us truly appreciate the amazing beauty located in our own backyards.

Through acquisition of these properties, and through partnering with the community, they are working to protect the natural resources of Northern Connecticut. They are entirely privately funded. For more information, please refer to www.northernctlandtrust.org

This is truly a diamond in the rough. From the moment you cross the stream, you know you’re in a very special place. The blue trail is just under a 2 mile loop. It is a shorter hike if you take the right fork when the trail splits but there’s no harm in going the long way – the area is truly magnificent. From that right fork, the cache is approximately .4 miles from the parking lot which is located at the entrance of the farm off Rte 190.

This area is open to the public only on weekends and holidays. Weekdays are reserved for NCLT members only. Brochures outlining the rules and the trails are provided. Please read and abide by them.

The trails are well marked and very well maintained but are a little rough or narrow in some areas. Walking on parts of the trail could be tricky in wet or snowy weather and special attention should be given to young children at all times.

The cache is a 6 x 8” lock n lock. THERE IS NO NEED TO BUSHWHACK, the cache is less than 50 feet from the trail. The colored beaded pencil is not a trade - please leave it with the cache.

While in this area, please take a few minutes to visit another cache named CCC which is a very short distance up Rte 190 and well worth the trip.
