I was invited
to go on a birthday geocaching Skyline to the Sea hike and
decided to set out some additional caches for the birthday boy
and friends to find.
Rancho del Oso is located on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County,
just south of the San Mateo County line, not far from Ano Nuevo
State Reserve. On the inland side of Highway One, the Rancho del
Oso Nature Center is a quarter of a mile in from the highway. The
Nature Center is open from noon to 4 p.m. on weekends, but the
interpretive and other trails are generally open throughout the
day.
A walk through the Marsh trail will take you to the Big Basin
Park office nearby the Horse Camp campground.
Rancho del Oso has a large freshwater marsh area, riparian
thickets of alder and willow, and Monterey pine forest. This is a
good area for birding.
