Junction Cabin is a lovely large stone cabin
at, well, a junction of tracks. The cabin sits in a fairly large,
flat clearing with a picnic table or two and BBQ facilities. The
cabin has a rainwater tank as well as being able to provide shelter
should you wish a respite from the weather.
WHAT TO BRING And speaking of weather,
Junction Cabin is just over 600m above sea level. As always while
walking on Mt Wellington, be prepared for changeable weather: Snuva
advises you bring water, sun hats, sunscreen, wear layered clothing
(with a water-proof outer layer) and snacks for any dogs you might
bump into (or for you and your companions to munch on if you don’t
run into Snuva). Humans, dogs (on lead), and mountain bikes are
allowed on tracks in this area.
ORIGINAL CONTENTS When selecting swaps
for this cache, Snuva kept in mind that you will probably have been
walking at least a hour to reach it. Contents at time of placement
were: deodorant, odour eaters, cotton buds, sunscreen, sterile
strips, cotton buds, daffodil day pin, spectacles cleaning cloth
keychain, Australian rubber stamp kit, and greeting
cards.
DIRECTIONS These directions are pretty
specific, so if for you half the fun of finding a cache is figuring
out the route, don’t read any further; likewise, the hint will tell
you right where to go, so only decrypt if you really can’t find it
and would be depressed if you left with a DNF.
There are several tracks that lead to
Junction Cabin and some of the major ones are:
- from the Chalet head downhill on the rather
steep Hunters Track;
- from The Springs picnic area take the gentle downhill Lenah
Valley Track: you can check out two other caches one the way,
Cheesy Pigs Four Seasons – Winter and
Egyptian Monolith;
- from the end of Lenah Valley Road take the Lenah Valley Fire
Trail (it makes a right off from the Main Fire Trail not long after
you have gotten on the track). After a sharp bend you will see well
constructed stone steps take the track away from the fire trail and
go uphill on your right. Approximately half an hour from the time
you left Lenah Valley Road you will reach the intersection of the
Old Hobartian and Lenah Valley Tracks where you can hunt for
Old Hobartian Ruins. After this, take the Lenah Valley
Track for 15 minutes over fairly flat ground until you reach
New Town Falls. Junction Cabin is a further half an hour
past the falls.
