THE ABOVE COORDINATES ARE NOT CORRECT
The correct coordinates can be determined from the story below
The following is a based on an old Skagit (Salish) legend:
Raven was a very lazy bird, who lived along the Skagit River. All summer long, while other animals and birds were busy gathering and storing food for winter, Raven would play in the fields and fly among the trees laughing at them. Raven’s cousin, Crow, told Raven, “You should gather supplies. Less than seven months from now, snow and ice will cover all the available food.” But Raven continued playing and laughing.
When winter finally arrived and crystals of ice hung from the trees and covered the ground, Raven was in trouble. Raven loved eating, but he could find no food. So Raven set out visiting his friends. He was sure they would share some food with him.
Raven thought, “Squirrel must have lots of food. I remember seeing him hiding seeds and nuts all over the place. I think he has nuts stored in at least five hollow trees.” But as soon as Raven arrived at Squirrel’s nest, Squirrel chased him out, saying, “Remember how you played all summer instead of working? Hunger is the one thing you really deserve.”
Next Raven visited Bear. But when he entered Bear’s den, he found Bear sound asleep, and there was not one scrap of food in sight. Bear had eaten all his food before his long winter’s nap.
Raven was now so hungry, that all he could think of was food. What could he do? Then Raven thought of Crow. Crow had plenty of food, and he could easily play a trick on Crow. Raven arrived at Crow’s nest and said “We must start planning for your potlatch next week.”
Crow looked puzzled. “What potlatch?” he questioned.
Raven went on, “You know, the animals are excited about your potlatch. They all hope you will sing at it. You are the one they want.”
“Well, I don’t know,” said Crow. At that time, Crow actually had a beautiful singing voice, although he didn’t know that other animals appreciated it. Almost forgetting about the potlatch, Crow said, “Do you really like my singing?”
“Of course I do,” replied Raven, "Now go start preparing the food, and practice your songs while you cook. I will go and invite the rest of the animals.” Crow, quite flattered, agreed. He started preparing the food and practicing his songs. Crow was now very excited.
Raven invited all the animals (except one, Squirrel, who was overly stingy). Raven told them all to, “Come to my potlatch.” So all the animals thought it was Raven’s potlatch.
Soon, Raven was welcoming each guest as they arrived. When the guests were seated, Crow brought the food out. Just as Crow sat down himself, Raven told him, “Please sing us one song”. So Crow sang a beautiful song. And another, and another. After three songs, Crow started eating, but Raven said, “Crow, you cannot sing with food in your mouth”, so Crow sang three more songs. After that, Raven urged more singing. Soon Crow’s voice became so hoarse, that all he could say was, “Caw – Caw”. “My,” said rabbit, “That is one scratchy voice!” “Dear me,” said Crow, “Where has my singing voice gone?”
After the guests ate everything they could, all the remaining food was packed up so that the guests could take it home. There was nothing left and poor Crow was hungry, but he knew that each guest would have his own potlatch and invite him in return.
But the invitations never came. Crow had been tricked. Instead, they all had potlatches and invited Raven. All Crow could do was squabble over scraps of food discarded by others. And his beautiful voice never returned. That is why, even today, Crow is a scavenger, easily recognized by his raucous “Caw – Caw”.
The Cache represents the last Potlatch. The coordinates can be determined from the above story. Raven might be there, but Crow will never figure it out. Thanks to Danger & Calamity for the puzzle idea.
