West Mountain is over 1100 ft above Raquette Lake, NY.
This is a great hike ( 1/2 day or longer) for a beautiful view of the lake. West Mtn #1 benchmark is near by.
For a short hike ( 4hrs or so ) you can go by boat to Sucker Brook Bay ( nice sandy landing) or for a longer, land only adventure : go in Uncas Road either through Browns Track Ponds or Wadsworth Mtn. trail. Very easy walk till you get to the base of the mountain, then up you go......ck out the topo! Trail is in great condition and is the main
run off after a rain, :it will be really wet - waterproof your boots and walking stick is helpfull! In lots of spots, you will be walking on adirondack granite scarred by the glaciers. Cache is a clear plastic w/ blue lid with: my ceramic geo coin; various clay critters; bear pin; dog chew toy; wooden nickel; frig magnet; log & pencil, etc...
I named this cache monarch because after hiking over 1100 ft , got to the top of the mtn and there was the expected : flurries of dragonflies, couple of birds and then the
unexpected : a monarch butterfly. The monarch travels over 3000 miles to winter in Mexico!!!!!!
