This cache was placed to bring you to an often overlooked building
down a side street in Darlington. The coordinates will take you to
a historic building in Darlington County, the old Darlington County
Jail that now houses the Darlington County Historical Commission.
THIS IS A DAYTIME ONLY CACHE!
"COWBOY ROY ROGERS HERE FOR A DAY
Roy Rogers and his cowboys came to
town on Tuesday and gave the boys and girls of Darlington a real
thrill in their performances at the Liberty Theater.
The well-known western cow boy talked
to a number of tiny tots and autographed several books. His
performance both afternoon and night were greatly enjoyed by the
entire audience, both men and women as well.
It is not often that such a popular
visitor comes to Darlington, however, when he does a warm welcome
is given.”
Our granddaddy Austin Freeman was brought in as the Deputy Sheriff
in 1938 and was the Deputy Sheriff and later also the jailer living
in the building with his family until he suffered a fatal heart
attack in 1955 in one of the rooms on the first level.
This photo was taken on the front steps of the jail on 6/8/1939 the
day Roy Rogers came to town. Granddaddy is pictured third to the
right of Roy Rogers.
About the building from The News and Press:
“The Darlington County Jail was completed in October1937, at an
approximate cost of $60,000.
A three-story building of brick and reinforced concrete, with all
steel used in its construction, being tool proof and with bullet
proof glass used throughout , is considered one of the most modern
jails in the south.
On the first floor is an office, jail kitchen and jailer’s
quarters. The second floor is composed of two main cell blocks, one
for white and one for colored men. Also on this floor are separate
cells for white and colored women. The third floor is composed of
hospital cells and quarters for juveniles. In the basement are
cells for criminals with minor offenses. Each cell or day room in
the building is equipped with lavatory and shower.”
This cache was placed with permission of Doris Gandy, Director of
the Darlington County Historical Commission. This is a wonderful
place to visit and learn about the history of Darlington. They have
quite a collection of photos of Darlington, Hartsville, Society
Hill and Lamar. This building houses a library of information on
Darlington and surrounding communities making it a great source for
research.
This is a DAYTIME ONLY cache by request of the
commission director. This is a highly patrolled area and you do not
have permission to be poking around past dusk. If you do, you may
get to visit the newer Darlington County Correctional Facility and
there are no smileys found there!
The coordinates will take you to the front of the building. This is
where the photograph was taken with the men standing on the steps.
For some reason the coordinates have been jumpy here, maybe due to
the power line overhead. Stand as if you were the photographer,
dead center in front of the building on the sidewalk facing 1937.
You will either be standing on or straddling the manmade line in
the side walk. Turn to your right and cross four other “manmade”
lines. Stopping at the fifth line, turn to your left and continue
down the connecting sidewalk to the end. This is where you will
find the cache. This is meant to be an easy find so no invasive or
destructive hunting is required, not even in the flower beds!
