This cache is located in the Corral de Tierra area, the setting for John Steinbeck’s 1932 novel Pastures of Heaven. The striking feature of Corral de Tierra is the mysterious sandstone “Castle Rocks” to the east of cache. First described by the British explorer George Vancouver in the 1790’s, he mistook the rocks for a Spanish garrison.
As a child, the Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck and his sister Mary played amongst the Castle Rocks, recreating the legends and pageantry of King Arthur. In his works, Steinbeck described the rocks as a “…tremendous stone castle, buttressed and towered like those strongholds the Crusaders put up in the path of their conquests.”
Please be aware that the Castle Rocks are located on the private property of the Markham Ranch. However, an excellent public view of the rocks can be had by following a short trail from the cache site north to N36 33.578 W121 43.968. This trail climbs a short but steep hill, so please wear appropriate footwear.
