A good solid climb over 3 miles to the cache site up Skelfhill Pen a predominant landmark near the bonnie town of Hawick. The approach to the summit will take you over many types of terrain, some parts can be very overgrown and marshy. Good footwear is essential and is not recommended for younger children. The first part of the walk is along a forrest track, it is the last mile that becomes steeper and you will be finding your feet along landrover and quadbike tracks.
Park at the picnic site which is located just off the A7, follow the sign for Skelfhill. There are other routes up but parking is scarce and there are steep slopes from other approaches. Bring your dog and a picnic but please keep your dog on a leash as there are sheep nearer the top of the hill. From the car park follow the road for 2.5 miles to the trail head then turn up to the left onto a landrover track through a fire break in the forrest, this will take you steeply upwards towards the base of the summit, there you will see some clear sheep and quadbike trails which will take you to the top. On a clear day the views are magnificent and you can see almost all the major landmarks in the borders. Look out for a carved stone on the cairn, which has a strange looking face on it. The cache is a regular sandwich sized tupperware box with a clear lid, inside there are a variety of plastic bits and bobs. Enjoy
