Found in Eastern Passage,Devils Island is a small remote island in the mouth of the harbour.There are extreme currents,waves and reefs.It can only be reached by boat,kayak or canoe.
You can leave from Mc Cormicks Beach in Eastern Passage or take a shorter approach from the Hartlin Point shore area.
Cache is a amo can and can be found in a sheltered spot.Please recover the cache as you found it.
As always, there is a very nice FTF prize.
Without a doubt,this is one of the least visited islands around Halifax.Due to its overall difficulty to reach,it has become a sanctuary for birds and seals which can be seen daily on the far side sunning themselves on the lg outcropping of rocks.
The island was abandoned in the 50s when the lighthouse was automated and the last family left for good.There still remains a house and a few out buildings which are all in pretty good shape and easily explored.These buildings are not maintained and one should be carefull if exploring deep inside.Also take note not to bump your head[as I did] if you go to check out the basement.
On the far side of the island,there are lg rocks that jet out into the ocean and have formed deep crevices where water will shoot up to 20 feet in the air on windy days.
I'm not sure where the Island got its name [my guess is due to the currents,reefs and weather that besieges this place] but I can say that its a tough paddle when the weather is not perfect.
I make at least 1 visit every year to this remote island and I'm always amazed at what a great spot it is so close to home. This is without a doubt one of my favorite places to visit during the summer on a calm morning.
EXTREME CAUTION should be taken when paddling in and around the island.Weather should be taken into consideration.
