Twentieth-Century Utopia
3
This cache series will have you exploring the history and some
of the lesser known treasures of our home town. You might want to
bring pencil and paper with you to record the coordinates for the
multi caches and a calculator might be handy too. As the past finds
its way to us, we will be adding more to the “Utopia” series.
On the Edge
After a court ordered election the city council voted Wilber
Voliva, with his rumpled frock coat and enormous white cuffs the
new leader of Zion, replacing Dowie. Voliva then began working his
magic on his new world. Throughout his life he was profoundly
convinced that the earth is shaped like a flapjack, with the North
Pole in the center and the South Pole distributed around the
circumference. Voliva also thought the Sun was only thirty-two
miles across, and not more then three thousand miles away from
Earth. For many years, he offered $5,000 to anyone who could prove
to him the earth is spherical, the money was never clamed. Voliva
made several trips around the world lecturing on the subject. In
his mind, of course, he had not circumnavigated a globe; he had
merely traced a circle on a flat surface.
From his 5000 watt radio station WCBD here in Zion, Voliva
spread this views to the world in his daily preaching that included
the “Flat Earth Theory”. Voula remained leader until his death in
1942. Rumors have it that a few of his followers live in Zion now
and still believe in his theory. To locate this micro cache, drive
around Dowie Memory Drive ( the circle drive ), count the light
polls in the interior of the drive, multiply that total by 360. Add
that sum to 4221314 to find the North cords and 08744210 to find
the West. Good luck in you quest for the cache and if you find the
time, look up this “Flat Earth Theory” you might begin to
wonder…….. p.s. you might want to pack your calculator for this
one.
