The Tale of Frank Mud
Rumor has it that several years ago a homley, woodsy man named Frank Mud lived in the surronding forest you are about to go to. He was known as a trapper, a prospector and unfortunately a loner. Perhaps it was from the huge red x shaped scar he had across his face that kept him in the woods and not around others. Some people say that it was a tatoo, while others still say it was from a fight with a bear. Not much was known about Frank Mud.....
Supposedly, copper was what brought him to the area, an old friend of his said that he heard that copper could be found in the abundant forest of Northern Michigan. So he set out, looking in the thick,dense woods along small lakes and streams. Having no luck at all as a prospector (later he learned that it was further north in the U.P. that had the copper)he turned to trapping. Mink,beaver,raccoon and bear were very abundunt in the area and he made a good living. Occasionally, hunters and loggers would run into Frank, but he never talked much and mostly kept to himself.
Many years later when Traverse City was taking shape along with Interlochen and Lake Ann, folks started to name the lakes, rivers and streams. People remembered Frank and thought it fitting to name a lake after him, so they came up with Mud Lake. Over the years it was changed to Lake Dubonnet, but the old timers still call it Mud Lake.
Not much was known about Frank Mud after the town started to arise. Some people say he left the area and moved further North, others say he went back to his old life and moved back into town, others still say that he had a fight with a bear and loss. But I belive that Frank Mud still lives in the forest, roaming through the dense woods,trapping, fishing and keeping to himself.
