Cache is hidden in
the forested area up the hill and away from the Old Zoo to keep the
cache away from muggles. This Cache is a plastic pretzel container
and located in an area behind the Administration Building near Red
House Lake. Please place it back exactly as found and do not
destroy any of the vegetation while looking for it.
THE TRAVEL BUG HOTEL: The Allegany
Old Zoo Travel Bug Hotel is a Cache where you can go to trade
Travel Bugs. This Hotel is actually a container housing several
Travel Bugs. The container does have some other trade items in it
for Geocachers who just want to find a cache. The main purpose of
this Cache is to have a location to exchange Travel Bugs and to
have fun. Feel free to take a travel bug without dropping one off.
Just don't take 4 or 5 bugs and leave nothing (PLEASE). Do help the
Travel Bug in supporting its goal in taking it to its suggested
journey location. If any TB owner feels it has stayed in the cache
too long, let me know and I will move it for you.
HISTORY OF THE OLD ZOO: In October
1, 1933 the construction was completed for the Outdoor Museum / Zoo
built by Company 249 of the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.).
These structures would house many animals including fish, turtles,
snakes, deer, bear and other local animals. Since the outdoor
museum was only open during the summer season, captive animals
would be released back to the wild at the end of the season. For
more information, please visit the educational panel near this
structure.
Thanks to NYS Office of Parks for the pictures used
