Geocache Description:

THE CACHE CONTAINER IS MAGNETIC. Please put it back right where you found it.

The cache location is family friendly, at least in daylight hours, and is wheelchair accessible. (The entire levee is wheelchair accessible.)

Metro Center Levee runs along the banks of the Cumberland River from the bridge that carries I-265 over the river to the Bordeaux Bridge which carries US-41 over the river. Three miles in length, the Metro Center Levee protects the single most valuable piece of real estate on the entire length of the Cumberland River. Though originally designed and constructed with private funds, a recent partnership between the City of Nashville and the United States Army Corps of Engineers established a team to redesign and bring the levee up to current USACE standards, which included increasing the level of flood protection to that of the projected 500 year flood, plus superiority.

In addition to increasing the flood protection elevations for Metro Center, the new levee incorporates a bikeway, trailheads with public parking, shade structures, interpretive opportunities and applications of local art. Though artistic in nature, the structures that you will see along the levee are part of the flood protection system.

There is a paved bikeway along the top of levee from end to end, with great views of the Cumberland River. There is a trailhead at either end of the levee, with public parking and water fountains, and if you are running or walking there is a nice rest stop at about the halfway point.

The Metro Center Levee is a key section of the Cumberland River Trail System, as well as the Middle Tennessee Bikeway System. In the future we will be able to cycle from this central location to Clarksville, to the northwest, and to Murfreesboro, to the southeast, entirely on bikeways.

So drive your Chevy to the levee, bring your hiking, biking or running gear, knock off a cache, and sit a spell and watch the Cumberland River roll on by.
