Høvik Verk Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Makuta Teridax: Hei, loctite!

Makuta Teridax

Geocache Description:

This cache is a small box placed along the seafront in Veritas-parken.

A short history of Høvik Verk:
In 1855 the Englishman Thomas Graham Smyth acquired Høvikstranden and founded a glassworks planning to produce bottles.
At first the business did not go very well and bottle production ceased after a few years.
In 1862 the owners of Hadeland-, Hurdal- and Biri glassworks bought the site and in 1871 production was restarted.
In the following years the glassworks expanded into lamps and wineglass products. In 1898 Christiania Glassmagasin took over
and production continued to diversify into other domestic glass products. Around 1900 Høvik Verk was Bærums biggest employer
with some 200-300 workers, most of whom lived on the site. In 1907 the glassworks were converted from steam to electric power
as production too shifted from oil lamps to electric lamps. The big strike in 1921 and the economic downturn during the twenties and thirties
contributed to the moving of glass production to Hadeland glassverk. In 1947 production was opened again, this time the products were lamps,
steel shelves and filing cabinets. In 1972 the steel production was moved to other sites and the property sold to Det Norske Veritas. Veritas has
kept many of the old buildings and keeps the grounds open to visitors all year around.
