This is a driving tour of Woodbury, or I guess if you are a hiking fanatic you COULD walk it. Not suggested though…12 steps, ending with a traditional cache placement.
I have tried to find interesting or historical places on this tour of Woodbury. All of the steps can be done at any time of the day or night ( w/ flashlight) EXCEPT the final stage where the cache is located. That area is only open from Dusk ‘til Dawn.
If you attempt to do this at peak traffic times, you will find that the difficulty will go up a star or so. Please take your time to enjoy this venture through the historic city of Woodbury NJ.
Grab your GPS, gas up the Geomobile and don’t forget your calculator !!
Step 1 : N 39 50.029 x W 075 08.689 will take you to a memorial placed for the veterans of World War II. This park has been the site of this memorial since what year? Find the date it was dedicated and subtract 1078 to give you the last three #’s in N 39 50.322 x W075 08. XXX.
Step 2 : Locate the above coordinates and find the paintings on each side. The one you seek looks like a quilt and has a date next to the Friends Meeting House.
Take that number, subtract 1288 from it to give you the last three # ‘s of the North coordinate
N 39 50. XXX x W 075 09.084 . Now find the building on the painting…
Step 3 : This house was used during the American Revolution as a place to care for wounded soldiers.
The first day of school time will help you to the next stage. Take that number, subtract 353 to give you the last three #’s for N 39 50.647 x W 075 08.XXX
Step 4 : Here is a cool place for your young Travel Bugs
To climb and bust out some energy…
The bottom left side of this thing will give you a new number. Take this number and add it to 665 and it will give you the last three numbers for the next stop.
N 39 50.865 x W 075 08.XXX
Step 5 : The graveyard and site of Presbyterian Church acquired August 10, 1721. Many Revolutionary War soldiers are buried at this site. The log church was used as a hospital by the Continental troops following the Battle of Red Bank. Look well to find the drummer boy T.J. When was he born? Take that number and subtract 821 from it to give you the numbers for the last three west coordinates… N 39 50.358 x W 075.08.XXX
Step 6 : Your next destination is located in the center of town near the police/municipal complex. Stand in front, pay your respects, then turn around and get the number off of the bench next to Ray Cline…
Take 730 and add it to this number to get you your new location. Plug into west coordinates.
N 39 50.190 x W 075 08.XXX
Step 7 : This station was built in 1883 in Eastern Stick style featuring a hipped roof with slate shingles and decorative ‘ stick work’ in exposed porch rafters. The numbers will lead you to a crossing guard tower that was dedicated during which year ? This number minus 1350 will send you on your way…plug into west.
N 39 50.025 x W 075 08.XXX
Step 8 : Dedicated to the Woodbury Police Force, this monument is only steps from the next stop. No need to move the car ! Take the year this plaque was placed and subtract 1315 to give you your new numbers in the west coordinate. N 39 50.050 x W 075 08.XXX
Step 9 : Go down the walk, turn left towards the light on Evergreen. Walk west to the next spot.
This is the oldest surviving Conrail Watchman’s Stand in New Jersey. It was originally located at North Broad Street City boundary at Park Avenue. It was relocated to this park and refurbished by WORC in 1985. Take the year it was dedicated and subtract 1814 from it to give you the last three coordinates for west.
N 39 50.334 x W 075 09.XXX .
Step 10 : The bronze Soldier’s Memorial to commemorate the dead of Gloucester County who fell in the World War. Designed by R. Tait McKenzie. The date on the bottom of the concrete podium it is on will give you your new numbers. It ends with 8. Take that number and subtract 1651 from it to get the west coordinates. Plug into N 39 50.196 x W 075 09.XXX
Step 11: You can walk from the soldier to this one, or drive, you have to go that way anywho…
You are looking for the top of a building that has G.G. Green on it and the date you need. Just go to the approx. coordinates and look up and east. No problem right ? Take the date, subtract 958 and you will have the numbers for the final cache site when you plug into the west coordinates. N 39 49.829 x W 075 08.XXX
Step 12 : This is a really nice area to take a walk around the lake after your drive…
Find the cache in a traditional spot, with a twist.
Hope you enjoyed my little tour. Woodbury and other communities around the area are rich in their own type of history and interesting spots. This idea I got from doing a cache in South Jersey called “ House Numbers “
