Devil's Elbow Cache Traditional Cache

Located on the south shore of the North Saskatchewan River at Devil's Elbow Rapids.
This cache was placed on our second annual canoe trip of the North Saskatchewan River. Devil's Elbow Rapids are the largest and longest set between Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House. They are rated as II+ rapids, but this rating varies depending on season and water level. The rapids are easily avoided by less experienced paddlers by staying to the far right side (inside turn) of the river. I believe the nearest boat launch is at Horburg (note that there were two other caches near Horburg at the time of placement). It is wise to check water levels and conditions with local authorities prior to setting out. Mountain Equipment Co-op has good maps of the area and Topographical maps are recommended as you will also encounter many other sets of rapids and hazards such as strainers and rocks on this section of the river.
This year we put our canoes in the water at the Nordegg bridge. It is a three day paddle from Nordegg to Rocky Mountain House. Devil's Elbow is an excellent place to camp on the second night if you start in Nordegg. We even discovered an outhouse here this year, but I did not mark the coordinates...I will get them if we do the same trip next year. If you're camping overnight there is a good tree for your bear hang near the outhouse.
The terrain rating drops to only one star once you've landed on the beach at Devil's Elbow. It is a beautiful trip. Enjoy!
The cache is a small Lock N' Lock container in a green garbage bag. Sorry, but you'll have to bring your own pencil as I accidentally left mine at home in Calgary.
