The West Point Inn is on the upper south slope of Mt. Tamalpais.
The Inn was once a stopover for passengers who rode the "Crookedest
Railroad in the World" up from Mill Valley to the top of the
mountain.
This is a great spot with amazing views of the surroundings and
it's a relatively easy hike with a number of approaches.
Several times a year, the West Point Inn Association holds
Sunday morning pancake breakfasts. The final breakfast event of
2005 is being held on October 9th with breakfast being served from
9am to 1pm. The cost is $7 for adults and $6 for kids.
The geocaching get-together will take place during the two-hour
block between 10am and 12 noon to give out-of-towners some time to
get here, get parked and make the hike to the Inn.
Plan on about a 45 minute uphill (but not too strenuous) hike
from most directions. The Inn website has a map and
hiking and
parking info that will be helpful to first-timers.
You can choose your own approach, but on a recent geocaching
adventure, cooperphoto and I made the following easy hike that
netted five caches. We put one car at the Bootjack lot (fee
required) and parked the other car at N37 54.703 W122 34.656 near
the trailhead. If the trailhead lot is full, additional parking is
available at the Mountain Home Inn lot. Now follow this trail of
caches that will lead you to the West Point Inn along a gradual
incline:
GCQEWX: T’aint no firewood!,
GCKREQ: Vista 2,
GCPTVQ: The Crookedest Railroad in the World and finally
the
GCQKDG: West Point Travel Bug Inn which put us very near
the event site. On the way down, we grabbed
GCPTVX: B's Question and dropped into Bootjack to pick
up the car.
FLASH!!! More caches are
appearing daily and I have it on good authority that we'll see even
more before the event! Check out these new ones:
Let me know if you're coming and if you and your party will be
having breakfast at the Inn.
See you on the mountain!
