Fort Craig was established in 1854 near the Rio Grande River. It
was a lifeline that protected communities and travelers. The
National Historical Trail El Camino Real was a lifeline that
connected Mexico City with Santa Fe. The primary function of the
fort was to protect the central portion of the Camino Real and to
keep the regional troops supplied with food and ammunition. Many
Buffalo Soldiers were housed here. This site is a BLM special
management area and is listed on the National Register of Historic
places. Cache includes a FTF, TB's and other small items.
