Geocache Description:

From I-25 south take 115 exit east to route 1. Go north to sign for Fort Craig. From the north get off at exit 124. Take dirt road east to route 1 south. Go 6.2 miles to sign for Fort Craig. Park in parking area provided. There are picnic tables and restrooms nearby. When you sign the vistor guest book please indicate that you are a geocacher.

Fort Craig was established in 1854 near the Rio Grande River. It was a lifeline that protected communities and travelers. The National Historical Trail El Camino Real was a lifeline that connected Mexico City with Santa Fe. The primary function of the fort was to protect the central portion of the Camino Real and to keep the regional troops supplied with food and ammunition. Many Buffalo Soldiers were housed here. This site is a BLM special management area and is listed on the National Register of Historic places. Cache includes a FTF, TB's and other small items.
