The co-ordinates above will take you to the fascinating Bratch Locks. Constructed by James Brindley, they are one of the major engineering triumphs of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire canal. Originally said to have been built as a three lock staircase, the flight takes the canal through a vertical interval of 30 feet. Fragments of the original work can still be seen but the staircase was converted at an early stage into three conventional locks separated by 'pounds'. Two very large side ponds accept the excess diverted water produced from the upper two locks, and in 1927, when much reconstruction took place, a large weir was built. Closer inspection will reveal the differences between a "flight" and a "staircase" of locks. (There is a very interesting example of a staircase of locks at HooloovooUK's "The Whole Nine Locks" (GCQG7C) - well worth a visit.)
