Lantern Hill Lookout Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pofe: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

If you have any questions, please email me directly at Pofe@GeocachingAdmin.com . Please be sure to include the caches name and GC# or URL with your email.

NOTE: Do not reply to this email directly. The communication will not be received. To ensure a prompt response, please follow the method of contact described above.

Kind Regards,
Pofe

Geocache Description:

This traditional cache is located at the top of Lantern Hill in Ledyard, Connecticut. It is located just off a well-marked and well-traveled trail known as the Narragansett Trail. It is a fairly short but steep hike for this area, less than 1 kilometer long, but with a 100 meter change in elevation.

This cache is located in an interesting spot in south-eastern Connecticut. Lantern Hill stands in sharp contrast to the relatively flat surrounding landscape. Located right next to Foxwoods Casino, the base of the trail is tucked away on the right on a side road (Wintechog Hill Rd.) just past the last casino entrance heading east on Route 2. It is not officially a state park, but recently became a blue-blazed trail with a small sign at the base of the hill where you would park. It supposedly is partly on private property, although there's no indication where. One simply needs to follow this trail to the top of the hill. Once at the top, you'll be treated to a beautiful view of the surrounding area on all sides. On a clear day you can even see Long Island Sound in the distance to the south. The hill is mostly solid rock, and is popular with climbers, and there are several steep drop-offs at the top, so don't stray near any edges.
The cache is located off the blue blazed trail at the top of the hill, not visible from the trail itself. It is a standard ammo box with a bunch of trinkets and a log book inside, nothing fancy right now.. but that may change in the future. To be safe, we did not hide it anywhere near the edges of the cliffs, so don't bother looking too hard there. It's in the middle somewhere, but should be an easy find. Be sure to take some time to enjoy the view!
Also, I recently found a survey benchmark nearby.. it's at the top of the hill, roughly south from the cache, embedded in the rock, in plain view.
