Geocache Description:

This is the fourth of a series of caches located in the Riverland designed to highlight some of the places that are worth a visit and our recollections of time spent there.

Many years ago this playground stood in a dusty paddock with just the obligatory swings, roundabout and the craziest monkey bar set up around. Grant Telfer owned an engineering firm just up the road. One day he designed a spiral slippery dip, one that was about three times the height of those plastic McDonald’s versions and the word got around and people came from all around the Riverland to see what he had made and give it a try. Spurred on by the interest, Grant’s imagination was set free and each month he would add some new contraption, each more bizarre and more hair raising than the last. Within a few years, there was over a hundred different rides across the park. There were huge slides, roundabouts that twisted every which way and rocking rides the size of actual zoo animals, and I’m talking Giraffes and Elephants. A 20 metre high tower at the back spawned three giant slides, one straight, one in a triple figure eight and another that had three consecutive sharp drops that could stuff your pelvis out through your nostrils if you weren’t too careful. There were even two roller coaters that really gave the guts a twist. The news of the playground had now spread Australia wide and on a fine day, you could be sharing the park with over a thousand others. All this and the park was still open free to the public. With such fun brinking on the point of high danger, there were always injuries and broken bones were common. Unfortunately, the era of the lawsuit came along and the insurance for public liability skyrocketed within the space of a few years. Eventually, Grant could do longer afford the insurance and appealed to the local authorities for assistance. No one put up their hand. After much public discussion, the day came when it would have to close if there was no help forthcoming. No-one really believed this would happen but the Rabbitto family had a feeling that this was really it and we set out one evening after work and school to enjoy the playground one last time. We played well on into the night and we had the park to ourselves. Early the next day, the workers were out early and a cyclone fence was erected around the playground and the park as it had stood was closed forever. Later the Playground was reborn in the form that you see it now. It is still well worth a visit though and you can still see some of Grant’s handiwork around the park. The giant wire swing looks close to the original and we dare you to take a leap from the top deck. Now for the cache – It is hidden inside a structure within the park. As a nature of this structure, it is well possible that you could be standing within a couple of metres of it and still not be able to reach it without walking 50m or so. Please be careful in replacing this cache. we are now up to Version 6 and we are hoping that this one will get a better run.
