The Hopetoun Cemetary near Bacchus March on the Western Freeway is the location for the 35th cache by caughtatwork.
Hopetoun Cemetery was established in 1850-51, and was the first formal cemetery in the Bacchus Marsh area. The site is significant for the rare visible evidence it shows of a pre-goldrush farming community. It is also significant for its original rural context, its archaeological potential. The cemetery closed in 1941.
The way in to the cemetary is convoluted but easily achievable. Please do not park on the freeway to access the cache area. This is illegal and extremely dangerous. Please take a few moments to discover the correct way in.
The cemetary has a number of information boards which describe the site as well as the ruins of an old schoolhouse / church which are quite interesting.
The cache itself is a 2lt sistema container painted to match the surroundings and you shouldn't have any problems spotting the correct location as you approach. Please respect the graves and travel around rather than over them.
When the cache was placed it contained:
A set of 3 mini photo frames, a torch with battery, a yoyo, a set of Allen keys, a big bottle of bubble mix, 3 little pigs jigsaw, a roll of electrical tape, a 3m tape measure, a multi head screwdriver, some sinkers and assorted small plastic animals. The usual log book and pen are also included.
I hope you enjoy the cache location, so close to the modern freeway, yet a 100 years in the past.
