Geocache Description:

Traditional cache near prehistoric petroglyphs.

Enjoy a walk through the scenic park of Leo Petroglyph. The prehistoric rock carvings are located in the shelter area at the entrance to the park. The carvings were thought to be made by the Fort Ancient Indians (1000-1650 AD). In addition to the petroglyphs, interesting geology and flora can be seen. Honeycomb pattern weathering of rock faces. Sandstone formations where the trees that were encased have rotted away leaving hollow "tubes". Colorful fungi. A number of small waterfalls cascading over bedrock can be found after recent rain. (Very pretty ice formations in the winter.) There are a number of trails that wind around and descend through the crevice. Hemlock trees that grow from the depths of the gorge and tower high above it are a sight to behold.

I'm told that the park is currently maintained by a Native American and his son. I think it is both fitting, and they do a very fine job at keeping this park looking nice.

10/3/2006 - Cache has been replaced and re-hid in accordance with the Ohio Historical Society's Geocaching Guidlines, and placed with approval from the OHS. Cache is within a few feet of the trail. Be sure to re-hide well. Container is well-marked.

HINTS: The cache can be found a short walk (less than 1/2 mile) down the path from the shelter. Please be careful, as there are steep slopes and cliffs in the area - hold onto young ones tightly. Your GPS can fool you, but be assured, the coordinates are good. I've used a number of technique to get them as close as possible.

As it is a new hide location and new container, previous finders are welcome to re-find.

More information on the park can be found at: (visit link)
or google "leo petroglyph"

This is one of my favorite places in the area to visit. I hope you like it as well. The park is very peaceful. The parks popularity has seem to have grown over recent years, but still remains a tranquil place to visit.
