Geocache Description:

The cache is located in Crow Butte park on a ridge about 3/4 mile above the camping area. A 377 foot elevation change.

Crow Butte closed under management of Washington State Parks Oct. 1, 2002. The landowner, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, now has a private operator managing the park. Crow Butte reopened on Wednesday August 13, 2003. Under new management the park is now reopened to any travelers. The site's recreational features include: boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming.
The park is situated on the historic Lewis and Clark Trail. Crow Butte State Park is a 1,312-acre camping park with 33,910 feet of freshwater shoreline. Crow Butte is popular with windsurfers and 1000's of migratory birds. In fact, this unique environment has sometimes been referred as the "The Maui of the Columbia".
When homesteading began in the area in 1850, the Crow family was one of the first to come west. The site of their homestead is now under the waters of the nearby John Day Reservoir, but many of their descendents live in the vicinity. During a 1941 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey, the name "Crow Butte" was assigned to the area. The park officially opened in April, 1977. Prior to being an island, Crow Butte was a hill. In the 1970s, when John Day Dam was built and flooded the Columbia River, waters formed around Crowe Butte, turning it into the island it is today. Day use fee is $1 per person. The container is a gray metal box.
