Geocache Description:

This Cache replaces the former Money Chest 1 cache which was not too popular with the Security Guards at Coin World. The cache is now hidden close to a road in Pretoria, overlooking the northern part of the city.

Money Chest 2 is Cache Fan’s second theme cache, this one specific dedicated to Coins, Banknotes, Medals and the like. Please note that only theme items should be traded, this makes the cache more interesting as a suitable item has to be sourced before attempting to find the cache.

Money was used as far back as 4500 years ago, long before people could even write. Today, when we think of money, we think of coins, banknotes, cheques and credit cards. In the past however, many different things such as salt, seashells, rough metal pieces and cattle were used.

Long before explorers such as Bartholomew Dias and Vasca da Gama rounded the Cape, earlier travellers visited our shores. From their ships, some of which were shipwrecked, Egyptian and Roman coins from 200 BC were washed ashore on the East Coast of Pondoland. Likewise, gold coins, Zecchinos, minted in Venice in 1280, were found in the possession of this countries inhabitants.

In those early days, barter was the prevalent form of trading. Ostrich shell beads, iron spear points and cattle were exchanged and earned the status of currency as time went by. Once explorers started visiting our shores, they also traded items such as copper bracelets and coloured glass beads in exchange for the local products they desired.

The original content of Money Chest 2 are banknotes and coins collected during Cache Fan’s extensive travel in Europe, Africa and Far East. No South African legal tender has been placed in the cache, if possible keep it this way.

Please do not place heavy rocks directly on the cache to prevent damage.
