Geocache Description:

This old bridge stands proudly in the shadows of our modern Interstate Highway System.

This is a log only cache. Bring a pen/pencil. Watch for cars! There is a Bonus USGS benchmark on the SE corner of the bridge if you log benchmarks or just need a new icon! It is A 466 (AYO795).

This old bridge in south Bexar County was constructed by the Topeka Bridge & Iron Company and was declared the "Somerset-Leon Bridge" in 1914.

To give you a sense of time...Here are a few facts about our world in 1914:

World War I began,The Panama Canal was opened,The worlds first "Red & Green" traffic lights were installed in Cleveland. Charlie Chaplan made his first movie "Making A Living", Sirloin Steak was $.24 cents a pound,milk $.14qt, eggs $.50 dozen, postage stamps $.02ea,bread was $.09 loaf, sugar $.05lb,coffee $.30lb.

The Ford Model T was the car of choice at $565. It topped out at 30 MPH, and got 12 MPG. "Cracked Gasoline" cost $.06 per gallon. The "new" dance craze was the "Foxtrot."

The "tube" radio was being tinkered with, and cars still had "gas" head lights.

Woodrow Wilson was our President and Joe Lewis fought his first fight, winning a total purse of $7.00

The average median monthly family income was $63.

My how times have changed! If only this old bridge could talk...The stories it could tell. Stay long enough to read the plaque, an look at the decorative construction.
