Little Willie Torbett Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

NidoMio: As much as I hate to archive Little Willie, I have been out of State on business for much longer than I ever intended. It looks like I might not make it home until March, so sleep sweetly little Willie. I'll be back.

Geocache Description:

This is a log only micro in honor of little Willie Torbett, who lives here, along with at least 16 others. Congratulations to CacheNaFlash for his FTF on this devious hide!!!

Willie Torbett, aged 4 years old at the time of his death, reportedly was the grandson of Isaac Haddox - the first official non-native settler of what is now known as London.

Like many others, Isaac homesteaded 4 acres south of London, and was attracted to the area for its timber and wild game. In the 1880's an epidemic of Typhoid struck the Haddox family & the rest of the Haddoxburg community which resulted in the remaining members of the Haddox family leaving the area for good.

Although the 1870 census shows the Haddox family as a family of 12 (Isaac - 47 years, His wife - 36, and ten children ranging in age from 5 to 20), we cannot overlook little Willie. Buried in the Haddox "Slave Cemetery", little Willie was of mixed race. Because he was Haddox's grandson, little Willie actually got a real grave marker, proving he was more than just a piece of property to the Haddox family. Along with Willie, are 16 known, but otherwise unmarked graves, some of which include slave railroad laborers.

Unfortunately, some mischevious teenagers have tried, on numerous occasions, to "see bones" and have therefore made attempts to lift the crypt lid. The results you see, is a broken crypt. Please give little Willie and the others at rest here the respect they deserve.

That said, the cache is not on or near any grave, and is placed with the blessing of the London Mayor himself. Bring your own writing tool and write VERY VERY VERY SMALL! Happy hunting!
