"Pittsburgh might amount to something if it weren't so close to Brownsville!"

A little Brownsville History

Brownsville played a vital role in the settlement of America's first frontier and in the industrial development of western Pennsylvania. The site where Brownsville now stands, formerly hunting grounds for Native Americans, was known as “Redstone Old Fort.” In the 1700’s Thomas Brown purchased land and laid out the town that is now known as Brownsville. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1814.

During the early 1800’s the communities of Bridgeport, Brownsville and West Brownsville provided supplies and necessities for pioneers traveling west. Some of the industries that aided these pioneers on their journey included: Keelboat making, glass, foundries, etc. The community of Bridgeport is currently included in the borough of Brownsville.

The very first steamboat, the Enterprise, to travel to New Orleans and return by its own power was designed and built in the Brownsville boatyards and launched from the Brownsville Wharf in 1814. The wharf, which is in the process of renovation, is located at the crossroads of Bank and Water Streets.

Brownsville also has the distinction of the very first cast iron bridge in the United States which was designed and built in the Snowdon Foundry in Brownsville and has been in use since 1836. During these heydays with such wealth and affluence, it was believed that Pittsburgh could not amount to anything because of its close proximity to Brownsville.

The National Road, the first federally funded road, extends through the town of Brownsville. This historic town, known as the “gateway to the west,” overlooks the picturesque Monongahela River…one of few rivers in the world that flows north.

Nemacolin Castle, 136 Front Street
N 40-01.331 W 079-53.012 The most outstanding early structure in Brownsville and perhaps along the National Road in Pennsylvania is Jacob Bowman's old trading post at Redstone Old Fort, now known as Nemacolin Castle. There are three existing sections to the building: the original trading post, the 1800s addition, and the Italianate addition of the mid-1800s. Currently maintained and operated by the Brownsville Historical Society, it has been open to the public from Memorial Day through Labor Day since 1962.

A = There is a yellow fire hydrant near the castle - on top of the hydrant is a 3 digit number written in black paint, WHAT IS THE LAST DIGIT?

Please be sure that you get the fire hydrant at these coordinates - there are several fire hydrants in the area !!!

Flatiron Building, 61-67 Market Street
N 40-01.350 W 079-53.159 There are only a few buildings of this shape in the United States. They were designed to fit triangular parcels of land and called flatiron because they were wider at the back than they were at the front and they had large roofs which made them resemble irons. This one, made of Flemish-brick, was used as a post office for a long time. It is entirely restored and is the home of the Flatiron Building Heritage Museum.

F = The sidewalk next to the building is made out of commemorative bricks, find the one that is dedicated to Charles and Anna Dimperio - WHAT IS THE LAST DIGIT OF THE DATE AT THE BOTTOM?
