A 4 stage multi cache which starts at the welcome center along Rt 17 in North Carolina just south of the Virginia border.
The state of North Carolina has created a biking/hiking trail which follows the old Rt 17 south from the visitors center 3 miles toward South Mills, NC. It is a great trail, wide, paved, flat, and winds through the trees along the canal bank. The visitors center is a worth while visit in it's self. They plant crops native to North Carolina such as corn, sun flowers, and cotton in season. There is a dock where boats traveling the canal stop for a visit or overnight stays. There is currently a new visitors center under construction which promises to be a show piece. To access the trail you have to follow a temporary path they have fenced off so you can avoid the construction and still enjoy the trail.
The final stage will hold some trade items. Please remember to rehide each stage as you find them. You will not need to leave the paved trail more than a step or two for stages 2 and 3 but stage 2 could be a thorn in your side. Please remember to "Leave no trace".
The trail parallels the new Rt 17 but there are no pull offs or places to park along the new road. For that reason the cache is not accessible by car please do not try it.
I chose to only take you about a mile down the trail for this cache. Remember if you choose to continue down the trail to the end it is 3 miles one way. About another mile beyond that will take you into South Mills. There is still a trail but it is right along the road.
