Ardmore Point
Geocache originally placed by Ronnie H in 2005.
The walk is 2 ¼ miles in length and will take approximately 1 hour.
Ardmore Point is a geographical oddity and designated Regionally Important Geological Site (RIGS), one step below an SSSI and a favourite with locals for that Sunday afternoon stroll with family or geo-pets.
You may come across local ornithologists during the winter months out to glimpse the over wintering visitors and where many a first sighting of rarer birds have been seen. There is an abundance of bird life, aquatic and field dwelling, along the shoreline for those interested in bird spotting and not forgetting the seals sunning themselves on the rocks at low tide. There are some unusual rock formations, and the predominate rock types are sandstone and conglomerate. The area has a fault line running through it, one side dipping and the other rising.
It is a fairly easy walk till you get to near to the cache when it starts to get a little muddy, not recommended for push or wheel chairs but safe for youngsters who may want to go to the shore and explore and not afraid to dirty their boots. When you get to the extreme end of the peninsula and looking over the Clyde you can see Greenock and Gourock opposite, Dunoon, the Holy Loch and entrance to Loch Long in the distance, the Rosneath mast, Gare Loch, where Faslane Navy Base is situated, and the town of Helensburgh famous for being the birth place of John Logie Baird, inventor of television and Deborah Kerr, actress.
The area can get very busy so take care when searching for the cache. You are half way round Ardmore point at this stage and you can continue on in full a circle to get back to the parking area but beware, there are several seriously muddy parts to the path that are negotiable with care and you will be able to keep your feet dry. On a clear day there is a wonderful panoramic view of the mouth of the Clyde and the entrances to several lochs. This is as good a view of Greenock that you will ever get! Enjoy!
