Geocache Description:

This cache is a rubbermaid container. The cache is kid friendly but watch our for holes in the concrete.

The town of Gay was organized in 1905. It was named after Joseph E. Gay a promenent mining exploration man who later became director of the Mohawk and Wolverine Mining Company. The Mohawk Mill started to process mine rock in June of 1902 and worked until 1932. The mill had four stamps with a capacity of 2800 to 3000 tons of rock in 24 hours. Mine rock was brought to the mill by the Mohawk and Traverse Bay Railroad. The smoke stack, which is still standing is 225 feet tall with an inside diameter of 13' 4" at the base and 9' at the top. From the location o f the cache there is a great view of Lake Superior.
