We often times take our local cemeteries for granted. While we
appreciate the history and often hide/find caches nearby to alert
us to these unique locations that may have been forgotten -- we
often forget that these locations need tender loving care from time
to time.
Here is our chance to "give back" to these areas and people
whose lives provide us with with the rich history this hobby often
highlights.
The Nashville City Cemetery
Opened in 1822, the City Cemetery is Nashville's oldest
public cemetery.
A walk through the cemetery is truly a walk through Nashville's
history. The gravestones tell stories of Nashville's founding in
the late 1700s through its growth into a modern 21st century
city.
In recent years the cemetery has fallen into disrepair due to
vandalism and neglect. You can join the Nashville City Cemetery
Association in restoring this fragile historic site by becoming a
member, supporting our fund-raising events, volunteering, and/or
making donations. We are always interested in hearing from
descendants of those buried there.
The cemetery is located at 1001 Fourth Avenue, at the corner of
Fourth Avenue South and Oak Street.
Many of you will recognize the cemetery as the home of
"Everlasting Love" and "The Anchor".
I'll be posting more details to the cache page in the coming
weeks.
Also, for those that cannot help on this Saturday another
smaller cemetery has been identified for an upcoming Sunday
event.
