INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #362

"Chickamauga"

Welcome to Shelton Cemetery located just off Old U.S 31, a stone throws from the town of Rochester, in rural Rochester Township, Fulton County. This is a small cemetery that has burials dating back to the 1850’s and is now inactive. Buried here are at least two soldiers from the Civil War that died during their service and one Revolutionary War Veteran.

David C. Shelton, the son of Lemuel and Catharine Shelton, was a soldier that gave his life to defend the Union. He volunteered on August 7th, 1862 and served in Co D 87 Reg. Ind. Vol. David was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga, in the southern state of Georgia, on September 20, 1863. After the battle he was moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he died from his wounds on October 8th, 1863.

Also buried in this cemetery is a John Johnson who fought in the American Revolution. He was drafted three times during the war. The first time was February 1779, and once again in the fall of 1780, and lastly in August of 1781. He was involved in the Siege of Yorktown in the fall of 1781. In 1791 he moved from Virginia to Kentucky and remained there until 1827. He then moved to Indianapolis to be with his children. He came to Fulton County with his family, and applied for bounty lands available to veterans at Rochester on April 2, 1855. Unfortunately, the headstone for John Johnson is not located at his grave and is now leaning against the tree in the picture.
