South of the South Prong Traditional Cache

An easy to find cache at a view point and rock formation area. A short bushwhack is required. Explore and enjoy.
Getting to this cache will take you through an area known as Red Creek Plains. At approximately 2.25 miles from the South Prong trail head` on Forrest Rd. 19 (N 38 57.504 W079 21.569) or .5 miles from where the South Prong trail crosses Forrest Rd. 70 (N 38 56.286 W079 22.109) pick up an obscure trail at N 38 55.984 W079 21.948.
Follow this obscure trail for .5 miles or so and when you think you're close enough start your bushwhack (N 38 55.462 W079 22.148 or thereabouts). According to the map I used the other end of this obscure trail can be picked up from the pipe line swath but finding it is on you.
** Noted gate closings **
Gates on Forest Roads 19 and 75 leading to Dolly Sods have been closed from January to early April every year to provide for public safety due to highly variable road conditions in winter months.
Forest Road 70 closed March through September.

If you're in a real hiking mood several interesting caches can be found in the area. WVBushwhacker has some good ones nearby and you may be lucky enough to snag one of the terrific maps offered as a trade item. I used one of these maps to help me find this area. I've also been informed that maps can be downloaded from www.whitegrass.com or purchased at the Canaan Valley Store in Canaan Valley, or the Art Company or Wilderness Sports in Davis. But snagging one from a cache is best :-) .
If you decide to go after this cache you'll be in rattlesnake and black bear country, so pay attention.
