Geocache Description:

Get Your Kicks On Route 66
Enjoy your drive down the Mother Road.

The intent of this series is to point out historic or unique places along old route 66 between IL and CA. It is NOT meant to be a power trail as caches may be 50 miles or more apart. Stop and enjoy these sights along the way.

When you find the FIRST set of coordinates and find the cache, look on the notepad inside for the NEXT set of coordinates. (NOTE: There is no cache at the 2nd set of coordinates.) When you get there (a short drive/walk away),face the river. From here, you can see all or parts of 5 different bridges dating back to 1900. in the middle of the river between the 2 existing bridges, you can see (during low water) the two caissons that once supported the old Votaw bridge (ca. 1900). By how close they are together, you can see how narrow the old bridge was! In 1931, the current bridge used to access Route 66 State Park was built to carry Route 66. In 1956, the current northern part of the I-44 bridge was built to carry eastbound Route 66 traffic. In the 1970's, I- 44 added another wider set of lanes and later filled in the middle between the two to complete the current configuration. Votaw bridge connnected Antire road from the east to Blakey Road in what was Times Beach, which ran across our cache Old Bridge#2 at Famous Station on the Frisco and then across the BuNSF tracks behind Sacred Heart church, then followed the tracks into downtown Eureka.
