This cache is located at the site of an historic war memorial and is considered tapu (Sacred) There is no need to walk in the gardern and please do not picnic here.
The cache site is a tiny park behind a World War I war memorial, located near Arowhenua, a long-occupied Maori village. What is distinctive about this memorial is its shape, which is that of the front of a meeting house, and the Ratana inscriptions, some of which are now illegible due to weathering and heavy coats of paint. Ratana is a Maori religion founded by Tahu Potiki Wiremu Ratana in the 19th century, which is still strong today, especially in the Wanganui district.
The cache itself is a large caterer's margarine container which, when hidden, contained a jester's hat in the Canterbury rugby team's colours (yay go the Crusaders), a waterproof poncho, a small container of baby's talcum powder, a hotel bottle of hair shampoo/conditioner, a container of deodorant, and the usual logbook and pen.
