Geocache Description:

Croaked Roque is located within Chautauqua Institution. During the summer season (late June through late August), there is a gate fee. You may ride a bicycle through the grounds, but cars are not permitted. Sundays are free. Post season, there is no admission fee and cars may enter (speed limit 12 MPH).

Croaked Roque Long ago on these grounds a game they would play Between octagonal cement boarders on a field of clay. Mostly indulged by males – usually a bloke Ne’er a cigarette, but a pipe he would smoke. A game of great science, a sport of cunning skill - The ground was level without the tiniest hill. Sixty feet by thirty – the court was quite large - Balls with a mallet through a wicket would charge. By the Depression it became part of history. It came and it went – why is a mystery. Never acquired by ordinary folk, A game of the idle, this game of roque. Roque (pronounced roke) involves two to four players. Contestants battled on marl courts covered by sand. A 5-inch-high concrete wall bordered the court, and players banked amazing shots. To win, a team had to move their balls in order by color through 16 wickets while hitting an opponent's ball at least once before proceeding through each arch. Balls were 31/4-inch composition rubber. Short rubber-handled mallets weighing up to 45 ounces sported either metal or ivory heads.
