NICE CEMETERY LOCATED ON RT. 180 LOTS OF HISTORY HERE. AKA Old Union Cemetery. AKA Pleasant Springs Cemetery.

Across from Pollard Baptist Church at the corner of Dixon Street. 421 Blackburn Ave. [1954 Ashland City Directory]. AKA Old Union Cemetery. AKA Pleasant Springs Cemetery. Below is an outline of research material collected by Teresa Martin Klaiber and Jack Goodwin concerning research to locate documentation of ownership of this cemetery. An early picture shows the cemetery on the same property but is now separated from same by Blackburn Avenue. "Abraham Crooks surviving trustee of Union Church and trustees of school dist 9...lot known as Union Church to be leased for 90 years...church shall continue to use the house as place of worship until new church house completed..... Cem to corner of school lot..." [Boyd Co Dbk 5-173] The church cited in this deed was built by Mr. Young along with John Howell and John Kelly about 1837 near Poage settlement...known as Union Church and was the beginning of Unity Bapt Church...Abraham Crooks is buried in Pollard Baptist Church Cemetery. Van Lewis deed May 16, 1887 near school house in dist 8 beg at corner of AC Howell burial lot on line with old Union Cemetery Boyd Co., dbk 20-80; [dbk 28-216]. John Lewis others McCown line to rock in line of cemetery lot...also all that part of cemetery that has not been sold. [Boyd Co dbk 23-497 Boyd Co.. Map references: M. T. Hilton Map located in the Hilton Collection, Boyd County Public Library [see scan photo collection below]. Plat Book 12 page 34]. 1892 Pollard Baptist Church minutes [read and researched by Jack Goodwin 2004]. "January 1892 change to the church to be known as the first Baptist Church at Pleasant Springs...3 June 1892 that the church give the right-of-way in front of their building for the purpose of making a road providing the county build us a fence...May 1893 Brother G. W. Howell as appointed trustee of the grave yard. August 1902 The Pollard Baptist Church...committee to raise funds to have the graveyard cleaned....September 1902 committee concerning graveyard retained until it completes its work....November 1913 Statement by Bro. G.W. Howell concerning fence for the cemetery - informting curcht hat a permanent fence could be put up for about $104.00. January 1914. Church was called to order...consideration of report of Cemetery Fence Committee...investigated and found that the church has no title to the lot - we would recommend that the church lend its approval and cooperation to this...others appointed to solicit funds to build this fence but the church is not to be obligated financially in the matter. 1935 April/May Ashland City Minutes "The matter of extension of cemetery in Pollard was discussed and a hearing set....C.R. Levi representing the McCown heirs...matter laid aside." [No further information was located in the minutes concerning this action. Teresa Martin Klaiber research 2003] Ashland Daily Independent, June 1, 1969 covered service activity of Boy Scout Troup #100. The article states that the cemetery had not been cleaned in 10 years. "...A two story brick school house was built adjacent to the cemetery in the early 1800's and stood there until 1938... October 24, 1995 letter written to the Ashland Chamber of Commerce concerning who maintains the cemetery and Howell family connections. [Gary R. Howell, Bloomfield, IN] 2002 Jack Goodwin 324-8584 trying to organize Friends Pollard Cemetery. March 2004 applied for grant funding for tree removal and 1 year mowing. Visited by Boyd County Cemetery Preservation Board May 2004.
