Geocache Description:

Tour of the Rock Shelter Trail - STAY ON THE TRAIL!!

Park at the Low Gap Trailhead Parking Lot N39*18.661 W86*25.481
The Rock Shelter Trail located within the Morgan Monroe State Forest is a 3.2 mile moderate looped trail beginning at the Southwest corner of the parking area near the road. The first section takes you out to a firetrail, then follows the fire trail back to a cut off that brings you to a series of switch backs that lead into a valley. The trail can become difficult to follow in the fall because of the leaves and/or snowfall, watch for the WHITE DIAMOND TRAIL MARKERS.

Once in the valley the trail winds it way through a creek bottom and shallows area before turning in to the valley with the Rock Shelter. This part of the trail is difficult to do during wet conditions.

After winding your way through the creek bottom you will finally come upon the "Rock Shelter" - a great place to take a break or have a snack.

The final leg takes you up a series of switchbacks along a ridge back up to the Landrum Ridge Fire Trail.

The Rock Shelter Trail is also a part of the 10 mile Low Gap Trail & Tecumseh Trail.

Trail Maps are available at the Forest Office located north of the Low Gap Parking area on the Main Forest Road, if you like hiking - this DNR Property provides access to seven hiking trails that cover more than 28 miles, including the northern terminus of the Tecumseh Trail.

STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!! This cache does not require any off trail excursions until the final 25-50 feet.

PLEASE NOTE THIS TRAIL FOLLOWS A CREEK BED along the valley, wear sturdy shoes...flipflops and sandals are NOT advisable. TAKE WATER, especially on hot days. WEAR ORANGE DURING HUNTING SEASONS.
